Joan Chappell Obituary

Joan Arentzen Chappell born March 26, 1931 in Franklin, PA died peacefully on July 22, 2022. Joan (Joanne) was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She attended Keuka College in Ithaca, NY graduating with a BS in nursing. She worked as a hospital nurse during her early days in Lansing, MI.  Later, she returned to nursing, working in private Doctors' offices in Greensburg, PA.  She served as a board member on the Mon Valley United Health Services and supported the Mon Valley YMCA. Throughout her life she was a member of the United Methodist Church of Charleroi, PA, Christ Casebeer Lutheran Church in Sipesville, PA, and the Latrobe Presbyterian Church in Latrobe, PA. She served as a Girl Scout leader, delivered Meals on Wheels, and served on the Spiritual Care Committee and the Hospitality Club at Friendship Village of Dublin, OH, after moving there in 2015.  

Joan was an avid skier, enjoying time on the slopes with friends and family at 7-Springs and many resorts throughout the country. She was also an avid tennis player and golfer. She enjoyed boating, water skiing, and gatherings with family and friends. Her favorite memories were an early trip back to Norway with her parents, ski trips to many resorts in the western U.S., Canada, and New England with family and dear friends, summer vacations with family at Cayuga Lake in NY, weekends with family at their cabin at Indian Lake PA, golf getaways in Florida, a trip to Europe with close friends, hiking in the Alps, and hosting her grandchildren at “Grammy Camp”.

Joan is the daughter of Einar M. Arentzen and Ragna B. Arentzen. She was also predeceased by her husband Martin L. Chappell, and her 4 siblings: Rolf Arentzen, Nikki Barger, Kari Larson, and Leif Arentzen. Joan is survived by her children: Gary Chappell, Tim Chappell and his wife Sherry, and Linda Zack and her husband Ken. She is also survived by her four grandchildren: Greg Chappell, Kelly (Chappell) O'Leary and her husband David, Daniel Zack, and Emma Zack. Joan also has three great-grandchildren: Lydia, Abigail, and Naomi O'Leary.

Visitation and Celebration of Life service will be at Hogan-Melenyzer Funeral Home on Thursday August 4, 2022. Visitation from 1:30 to 3:00, Service to begin at 3:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to one of Mom’s favorite philanthropies: Wounded Warriors and St. Jude.
